A merry tyre-changer who washed the car just a week ago. Also, when I changed the tyres I thought the thin layer of mud was irrelevant, then on Monday on the highway I worried the car will break apart with the tyres shaking so much. Which means I spent Tuesday morning taking the front wheels off again and cleaning the so-called irrelevant mud layer with my gloves. Now the ride is smooth. A smarter driver might have done it while changing the tyres the first time, and come to think of it, perhaps delayed washing the car until the roads are frozen.

The fields are full of geese, swans, cranes and other birdies heading south. There's a funny sense of motion in this photo though I was hardly moving, trying to drive as slow as possible so as not to scare the geese into flight. They decided to get scared anyway.

The first book tells a gruesome story about the total despair the Germans felt after the Reich collapsed and the Russians marched through the country. The suicide rates were astronomical. The next one is about suicide, too. (No need to get alarmed though - this is a mere coincidence.) Third one is about Hertta Kuusinen, a communist lady who was considered extremely dangerous in the 40s and jailed a couple of times, and her communist husband who allegedly was a double agent (there are two opinions on this). I am continuing with the era with Seamstress, which is a story of the last woman who was executed in Finland in the 40s, again for her communism and the huge threat she posed to the nation (slight hint of sarcasm here, perhaps, on my part). That era, with the war and the Russian and the Germans messing around in Finland and the communists and right-wing extremists is really insteresting and fortunately books about the time pop up every week, or so it seems. Then I read a Swedish thriller which was an ever-so-slight disappointment, yet creepy as... well. The fifth book is about the assassination of Heydrich, extremely good and it worked well with Terhi Rannela's Frau (about Lina Heydrich) which I read a little while back. At the moment I have some 80 books from the library (and some dvds too) so might take a while to finish them all - I'm trying, though.

I suppose most of these books aren't available in other than Nordic languages. Eugenides is, I enjoyed it. Anderson's second novel - don't know what to say as I seem to have misplaced the plot in the early pages and never found it again. Chossudovsky's book describes international politics in all its gore. Cleave - highly recommended. Adler-Olsen is Danish, becoming a bestseller globally it seems, so at least some of his books have been translated (I have Alphabet House in my to-read-pile in English). This one was a detective story of the most complex and scary sort, and since there's a whole series on Department Q it builds up. Like Blaedel, it was disturbing yet thrilling and spectacular, a new favourite for me in the same league as Jo Nesbø from Norway and (the already deceased) Stieg Larsson from Sweden (both of whom must be really really weird people, based on their books). If you haven't read Larsson's Millennium trilogy, you should. LISBETH SALANDER FOREVER. There's a fourth book in the series by another author which I haven't touched nor will. Sorry not sorry.
Other than reading I've been doing autumn chores. I've managed to do a lot but there's still much to do, as always. Also I had my 6-month retina check and was given an all-clear - I had been a bit worried about them, have been lifting heavy stuff and it's really not wise as the probability of a tear is high.

I read this book from the founder of the mentioned finnishresistantmovement. He's seen the light since but feels partly guilty for all the crimes his organization has done. A book teenagers should read, I think.

Background info: during the last few years in Finland, the right wing extremists have assaulted people, stabbed their political opponents and now finally (allegedly) killed someone. The story so far is, that they informed their police they'll be handing out flyers in the streets, then did a rally instead. As they were standing in a row with their Suomen Vastarintaliike (Finnish Resistance Movement - how DARE they use the word resistance?) flags, some people confronted them. Including a woman, who told them off quite colourfully (Hooray for her whoever she is!). Then later a man stopped, expressed his disagreement with their political views and (allegedly) spat on the street. A hothead, previously sentenced for different violent acts, then (allegedly) ran and kicked him in the chest, he fell down, hit his head, died a week later (allegedly) from his injuries. Surely, this is all based on unconfirmed reports so far but to me it spells "confront the neonazis and you might die" which, in my not so calm nor humble opinion, sucks big time.
So on Saturday there was a rally in Finland (widely reported in foreign media, too). 15 to 20 thousand people appeared on the streets of Helsinki to show that racism, fascism and neonazis do not belong in Finland. I couldn't go there but I took part watching the live coverage online. I am firmly on the side which by these right-wingers are often called world-ruining overtolerant gayfriendly leftie-greenies. They also claim that we don't read anything outside our own agenda.
Bah, humbug I say. All my life I've read stuff for and against, this side and that, equally and based my world-ruining gay-friendly leftie-greenie views on a wide basis of information. This time I kiled some nice completely innocent hours reading these two books. The blue one is written by none other than our current Basic Finn Secretary of Defence Jussi Niinistö back in 2003. It's a tribute booklet about the right-wing mutiny in the 1920s and 1930s and it has chilling, haunting mirror image in the happenings of the current era as well as a clear support from him. The Lapua movement hunted communists, they grabbed them, pulled them in their cars, then drove them to the Eastern border so as to help them enter their beloved communist state, Soviet Russia. After the communists had been scared silent they went for socialdemocrats and even grabbed a former president of Finland and drove him around, an act that ended the sympathies the current president seemingly had had for them. Finally, after they had committed a murder or three and several beatings and all kinds of criminal activity, they were on the verge of seizing the power altogether. The mutiny died out thanks to a speech the president of the time, their former supporter Svinhufvud gave, and the political situation calmed down somewhat. Until 1939, Soviet Russia attacking Finland, Finland first having sympathy for Nazi Germany (can I hear an "Ah!" of surprise? Didn't think so) and then being forced to drive the Germans out, Nazi Germany turning on Finland, then finally burning down Lapland on their way out and losing the war.
So what's worrying is that the situation then and now resemble each other hugely and, scariest thing of all, this dude who's now in the fucking government praises the movement and their acts against communism as well as taking the law into their own hands. What I'm waiting for now is for some smart journalist to read the book, make the connections and go ask the guy how he now feels about all this, seeing similar events in his own time only now he's watching the right wing punks from inside the government.
The other book is written by our former Secretary of Internal Affairs and her husband, devoted old fashioned conservative migh-even-say-fundamental Christians. It is a booklet on their views on how there are two genders and no more, how gays themselves are ok (because Jesus said "all" should come to him and their disapproval for this unconditional acceptance from J. could be sensed in the text) but having gay sex is sin, how Paul was right on this but how he might have been clearer on the gender equality thing as the genders are equal - after all Adam and Eve were created before the sin happened and the gays appeared after it which somehow suggests everything was ruined anyway by the time so it figures - but yeah don't question the equality and it's perfectly all right that the lady of the family has been in politics and whatnot but as for gays you should really trust Paul. Oh yeah, Moses too. They even mention Jesus in an off-hand way, in the last chapter. No mention on the do unto others-thingy, though. Just Paul. And Moses.
