My Yule was yesterday. Another geek girl had replaced her Assassin's Creed games for the newer PlayStation so she suggested sending me these PS3 versions for the cost of the postage. So now I have the whole series, all 6 games, which I could not have afforded otherwise. I also got some white chocolate with blueberries in the mail and gas - in the form of a gift card, not in liquid - so that I could participate on a writers' course next year. Unfortunately the course ended up to be longer than I expected and a fee was added so I'll have to skip it but I solemnly sweared to drive around just for fun otherwise.

And then the wrist band - I've wanted to have a Fitbit one for ages so I could get data on what affects my pain levels. Excel, you know, geek as I am, to the rescue. Then I found out that Fitbit is not waterproof. Then a Finnish online electronics store published their yearly "don't buy this stuff" lists and the Fitbits were on the podium with most problems. So I switched my wanting to Garmin which is waterproof and has a heart rate monitor and now my dear friend organized so that I got a second hand band. The joy! I've been tweaking settings and syncing and whatnot and waiting to build up  a database about different weather and meals and activity and stuff to see what has the biggest impact. No, materia is not the goal of life, but I sure appreciate these gifts now that I've gone so long with no possibilities to buy anything I want. This lot will cover several Yules.

Sekalaisii olotiloloi - Mixed feelings

I've been shopping and enjoying every minute of this rare occasion. I finally got a PS3 (at least temporarily) which meant I could finally purchase this game which I've wanted for years. It was 9,95 minus cyber Monday reduction so I got it for 11,90, postage included, a sum even I could afford. Merry Yule to me! For the time being though I'll be in Damascus riding around, completing missions.

Something incomprehensible happened this weekend. A young man shot three women in the middle of the street in Imatra. The next morning the names started to appear and one of the victims was my ex-colleague. We weren't close but got along and we met briefly just last week. We talked a bit and I told her she looked great. The other victims were journalists and I especially enjoyed the columns of one of them. One person's bad feelings and a resulting irrational act causes such an amount of sorrow it's hard to comprehend. And so far the media has concentrated on the victims - I thought instantly of the people close to the shooter. I wish them strength and hope they'll overcome the (probably inevitable) feeling that maybe if they'd have done something differently they could have prevented this.

I was asked for stitch markers. The largest mandrel I've got is 7 mm so I had to invent. I took a piece of 12 mm copper tube and made the rings with it, then sawed really carefully holding the spiral in my fingers. No bloodshed, yay. Then I added glue and a bead and now there are 30+ of these going to be tested. I also knitted a pair of tailored fingerless mittens but there's no photo of them, at least not yet.

On the news channels idiots become presidents. People drown in the Mediterranean. Some people think other people are not people at all. It creates havoc with blood pressure. Stay away.

But, today I participated in a seminar and got to listen to professionals talking about great things that have been created here, I mean here in the middle of nowhere! It was great.

After the holiday went back to work. The winter came, again.

There's this one tree that keeps its leaves and they turn white. My aunt said it's a bay willow, and since I've read my Tolkien (remember Old Man Willow?) I am staying away from it. But it looks creepy and great at the same time.

Kekri!

Kekri, tunnetaa myös nimil Samhain, Halloween, All Hallows' Eve, pyhäipäivä. No meilpäihä se on ain olt kekri, mitä tuota muuttelemmaa. Jos joku haluvaa juhlii halloweeni nimel ni miu puolest, samat pileethä ne on kuitekii. Tarkottaa jot muistetaa kuolleita, ja syyvää. Hyväst ja paljo. Tälviisii meil Karjalas! Tätä eesauttaa kovast se, jot tälle päiväle sattu tilipäivä. Heh.

Kekri, also known as Samhain, Halloween, All Hallows' Eve or All Saints' Eve. In Karelia it's always been Kekri. Nowadays we have a lot of Halloween stuff in the stores, dress-ups and so on - whatever floats your boat, I say. For me Kekri means remembering the dead and eating well ('cos that's how we Karelians roll, duh.)

We now have four cats left. This one lost her companion and has some beef with the other cats so she's been hanging out with me for some time now. We cuddle and recover from grief. This is the totally wild barn cat which hadn't been touched by humans before she was rescued and brought to me. It took just about one and a half years to tame her - or rather, for her to accept people as tolerable. She still doesn't allow being picked up but comes to cuddle with me, on her own terms.

The snow that came went just as fast and now we got some more. Someone in Finland had invented a word for this autum-winter phase, from the Finnish words syksy-talvi -> Sylvi. It's also a woman's name as you probably guessed. I like it, it's a fun way to describe this I-don't-know-what-season-it-is-time of year.

I'm on holiday from the library this week so naturally on the first official holiday day I visited the library. Good thing that I did, otherwise I'd have missed this exhibition. These are by Marjaana Tykkyläinen. I bumped into her as she was removing the sculptures and we made a deal: as soon as I win the lottery, I'll buy all her animal sculptures. This is a dragon by the way, as it has four legs. If it had two it would be a wyvern.

Syksyst talvee - From autumn to winter

We went to get some firewood with Mom yesterday and while there, looked for funnel chanterelles too. They don't grow here, where they could easily be spotted - oh no, they grow under a thick layer of brown leaves, invisible, and I swear I heard them giggle as we desperate seekers walked by.

The winter keeps on coming as we speak and I got to say a poorer driver wouldn't have made it home tonight. Today as I was squirming the car home in the thick sleet I once again wished for a Hummer, or an armored vehicle like Pasi. Or Nasu - it would actually be best as it runs on tracks and I've been in one and it could climb a vertical hill with no problems. But I'd settle for a 4-wheel-drive off roader.

Vandaaliloist tää Lissu on olt miu suosikki alust lähtei, tykkään myös kovast tuosta alnäkyväst Kullervost. Tän kassi kans myö männää paikkoloihi, iha mihi vaa se pääsöö miu mukkaa.

Got gifts from friends. Friends are awesome. The other sent me a Moomin glass, the other package contained a Gandalf t-shirt, an art vandals bag* and some beads she's made herself. Thrilled!!

*art vandals is a comedy page on Facebook, they take a painting and create a saying to go with it. My favourite is this, which says "If you play Nothing Else Matters once more, Lizzy, I'll throw you and that f*cking mandoline overboard." I also highly enjoy this one, in which the Kalevala antihero Kullervo is trying to find a strong 3G signal, as promised by his mobile operator. These images became so popular they set up a shop and business is good. I will take my bag EVERYWHERE!

Kevät - Spring

No eikse oo, ko ker maaliskuu jo? Peridoottii pujottelin oscarloi kahtois. Huippukohat ol Mad Maxin puvustaja, Ennio Morricone ja sit tietyst DiCaprio . Hiljaseks veti Lady Gaga ja kumppanit. Rispektii.

Isn't it Spring, it's March after all. I made this peridote & Swarovski & silver necklace while watching the Oscars. I cheered for the costume designer of Mad Max, Ennio Morricone and of course DiCaprio. Lady Gaga and co. on the other hand silenced us all, I think. Respect.
