Kessää ootelleis - Waiting for summer

Juuh elikkäs takana on kivulias ja uupumukse täyttämä talvi, pit nostaa lääkitystä tuplii jot saa jotekii ees nukuttuu ja jottai jaksettuu. Juur mittää en talve aikaa tosin teht, mitä nyt yhe villapaija sain valmiiks, se on jo toimitettu saajallee ja silviisii. A winter full of aches and pains and fatigue is finally behind. I doubled my medication to get some decent sleep to stay operational. Did not do much during the winter except for this jumper which I delivered to the person I had in mind while knitting it. It's +10 at the moment and I think it hasn't rained once today, which is nice.



Harrastuksii on kuulunt myös kodinkoneihe korjailu, tännää ol vuoros astianpesukone, hää herkes toimimast mut vissikii myö saatii se elävöitettyy. Jääkaappi korjattii viime viikol. Tuo astiapesukonnee vesisysteemi olkii varsi mielenkiintone, ko en olt enne näht mite se pelittää.

Today we fixed the dishwasher and looks like it is working again. Last week the fridge was under repair. The water flow of the dishwasher was quite interesting to watch, hadn't seen it before.

But then.

On May Day a grief settled upon the neighbourhood, a grief so severe it will probably stay here forever. If we somehow learn to live with it, that is enough but even that seems really impossible at the moment. The purpose of life seems to have vanished. It is so unfair that such a tragedy happens to nice people. It is very difficult to get a hold of life again after something like this has happened. I don't know how. Just taking one day at a time, I guess.

"On tämä saatana työmaa" - The things I do for food

The front lawn was so pretty! Unfortunately it doesn't stay that way, so I mowed it with not-so-cooperating Frank. The rest of the yard still looks like this so I'm not depriving the bumblebees' food. Yesterday, in related news, a hornet flew in the house. Jeez it's big, like a small horse or something. I resorted to the traditional glass & postcard combination and carried her out, then ran like hell. Her, because I suspect she was The Queen - she was GIGANTIC.




Saman päivän heiluttelin vähä talikkoo. Sillo urakka näytti viel aikamoiselt. Ja arvaa mitä! Sain migreenin!! Jee! Mie voitin taas! Ja välil mie itkeskelin ko äänikirjas ol nii surullissii kohtii, niiko nyt vaik Dobby. BYHYYY. Se on näätse tää karjalaine luonne, tiijäthäsie.

On the same day I went berserk with the pitchfork, for 4 whole hours. And guess what! I got a migraine!! Yay! I won again! And once in a while I cried listening to an audiobook which was at some points so sad (ref: Dobby.) BOOHOO. Us Karelians are such an emotional bunch, you know. Very unlike the stereotypical Finns.



Nii, jot tuumasin sit alottaa tänkii kauven ja pistin kylvyn tulile. Hitto et tek hyyvvää.

So after all that hard work I figured I can haz bath. It was great.

Today I finished weeding the soil.

Before noon the weather was ghastly so I baked some bread and buns and prepared a batch of soup vegetables and froze them.

Ruokaa - Food

Vuoheputkee mones ruuvas. Pastasalaattii ja Jamie Oliverin kikhernesalaattii ja tavallista salaattii ja uunimunakkaita muffinssivuuas. Ja kaikis tais olla vuoheputkee.

Goutweed in various forms. Pasta salad, Jamie Oliver's chickpea salad, a plain tomato-cucumber salad and frittatas made in the muffin tin. Goutweed in all.




Näitä oon kans kerräilt ja ryöpänt pakkasee.

I've gathered nettles, then boiled and frozen them.



Taas yks lentokone. Täst männöö niitä yllättävä paljo, Venäjä yl kaukoittää.

It is quite surprising how many planes fly by crossing Russia to the Far East.



Vuoheputkipenkki. Kasvaa ja kukoistaa ilma et tarvihtoo mittää tehä. Miu selkäin hajos viime viikol sen Frankilykkimise ja talikoimise kans nii jot iha vast nyt oon jonkiimoises kunnos (nii jot huomen sinne kasvimaale, kesä kulluu, pittää saaha kylvettyy, aika loppuu ja maalima on pilal.)

Goutweed flourishes on its own, no need to do anything, just pick and eat. Fortunately so. I broke my back really bad pushing Frank around and then adding some pitchfork madness on top, it's still sore but tomorrow I'm going to the vegetable garden no matter what  All will be lost otherwise, I need to sow the seeds and stop wasting time. Finnish summer is short and unreliable.

The apple tree is in bloom, too. This is not a very tasty apple unfortunately, I think this one's called Pirja. The photo clearly shows my nonexistent skills in pruning apple trees, as in I haven't done it at all just to be safe, I should put some effort and time in learning how to do it properly. I also have another apple tree which is my favourite but it's still young and doesn't bloom yet. I've understood bending it's branches downwards might help but the branches are so thin I haven't come up with a safe way to do it yet.

Vähä vajjaa kymmenä tuntii män kokonaisuuvessaa nurtsileikkuus, mut valmista tul ja ens kerta onkii sit ihavvarmaa helpomp. Sit mie aittelin jot jos vaik muutamat korvakkeet puuhastelis jot saap hommat taas alkuu. Kellavihreetä kevvääsee ja kirurgiterästä.

It took a little less than 10 hours to mow the whole lawn but now the first time is done. And as agreed, next time will be easier. Yeah. Right. So I thought I might make a few earrings to get the jewellery shop going again. Spring green with surgical steel.

So now that the lawn is done for a while, I grabbed the pitchfork and worked in the vegetable garden. Help was again available although she focused on supervising my work, occasionally playing with the weeds I pulled and demanding some love & tenderness. I was happy to oblige.

Etenöö - Some progress

Mjoo. Eile ol vappaapäivä ko ol  migreeni. Tännää vejeltii kolmise tuntii ja saatii viimevuotine kasvusto nuri, nyt ei ois ko tieyläpuol ennää, heh heh (väsynyttä nauruu niiko). Ja sit tulkii migreeni! Ehä siin ko pillerii kitusii, josko huomen sit se loppu. Siel on viimevuotise kasvuston lisäks melkomoine myyräpopulaatio, päätelle siit mite monta myyräkekkoo sinne on ilmiintynt. Niitä on sit nii lusti tuuppii tasaseks ko kuiva multa pöllyvää silmii, ai että. No, ens kerta on sit jo helpomp. (Ihavvarmaa on.)

Yeah. I took a day off yesterday because I had a migraine. Today Frank and I spent some 3 hours of  quality time together and got this part done. And guess what! I got a migraine! Now all that's left is the other side of the road, which, in addition to being hard to mow due to the dried hay growth of last year, has served as a recreational center for moles. A lot of them actually, judging by the mole hills that appeared in just a few weeks. Oh what fun it is to push Frank the Heavy around, flattening the mole hills as we go, puffing up dry soil clouds into my eyes! I try to comfort myself with the thought of next time being much easier. (Yeah, right.)

Nurmikol - On the lawn

Jatkamme sarjaa "pihal ja puutarhas" eli siirryttii nurmikole. Noh. Täs on Frankenstein elikkäs Frank. (Calamari Union: "Anna palaa, Frank. Tuttu latu.") Hää onkii aika epel: ruma, painava, parsittu ja korjattu. Päivä takuu päättymise jälkee hää herkes vetämäst, ja vetosysteemhä ol sit tietyst tehty sillee jot ihe vekoti ol hitsattu sen ympärile jot ei onnistu korjaamine mitekää. Mut eihä siin, jaksaaha sitä työntää ko syöp kunno ruokaa, jatketaa! No sit hää tuumas jot kerräämine on iha vihoviimosta ja kerräin läks tyyte irti. Kasvimaa ois arvostant kovast sitä ruohosilppuu, mut ei sit ko ei ker huvita kerätä. Siit seuras jot hää rupes tukehtummaa helpost ko tuo takaläppä ol allaal, nii jot kiinnitettii se luukku auk -asentoo rautalanga kans. Sit Frankil ol vissikii ärsyttävä pikkunälkä, ko yks kesä hää tempas etupyörät kitusiise. Hajettii sit Biltemast uuvet ja taas mäntii. Sit irtos jous, ja katkes vaijer, ja vaik mitä - rautalangal sain hänet kolme kertaa korjattuu, mut sit luovutin ko ei ennää kestänt käynnis. No, nyt sit kahottii josko hänest viel sais pellii, ja kuormajous ko irrotettii (turvamekanismit, pah!) ni iha pien rautalanka piisas. Nyt hää vörkkii taas, ja mie surruuttelen onnessai pitki pihhaa. In our series "on the yard  and in the garden" we have progressed to the lawn. Hi everybody, meet Frankenstein, Frank for short. He's ugly and heavy and he's been fixed a million times with wire.

A day after the warranty ended so did the self-propelling. It was added to Frank's chassy in the very early manufacturing stages so that Frank was practically welded around it. Impossible to fix, that is. But I'm strong so no matter, I can push him around easy. Then Frank decided that bagging the cut grass was a completely useless feature and stopped doing it. I did have use for the shredded grass in the vegetable garden - I used to cover the soil with it, it helped maintain the moisture and stopped weeds from overtaking the veggies, but Frank said this was non-negotiable and I had to give in. Removing the bag resulted in Frank choking on longer grass continuously, so we took some wire and yanked the rear flap into a permanently open position.

The next summer Frank was probably hungry because he ate his front wheels. Well no matter, we did a road trip to Biltema and got us some wheels. They're smaller than the originals though so he's now got a mean forward-leaning look. Then flew a spring and a wire snapped and and and - three times I was able to fix him with wire, then I gave up. Therefore all the summer of 2015 we had a jungle around the house, with meter-high thistles and nettles.

This spring we took a look wondering if we could revive him. We took the safety mechanism off (they're Bah! Humbug anyway) and after that a teensy weensy bit of wire did the trick. IT'S ALIVE! So Frank and I have had lots of sweet moments together - I actually like mowing the lawn, it's like going to a gym and a back massage all in one, plus my skin likes the sweating, the short grass keeps the ticks at bay (with seven pets, not at all a minor plus) and my shoes or toes stay dry when walking on the yard.

Kevääkoivuvihree!

Spring birch green!



Harva assii saap nii levollisele mielele ko se jot kaapit on täys ruokaa. Täl kertaa se ol kissaruokaa. Tilasin raksuloi (kymmenä killoo, piisaa ehkä kuukauve) ja Latzii, paitsi jot se on maalimal Felix. Mei kissat tykkäsiit täst kaniankast kovast, toivottavast tykkäävät koko kahekymmenäneljä purki eest.

I get a content zen feeling whenever my stocks are full of food. Today it was cat food, a shipment of dry food (10 kilos, will last for about a month) and Latz  which is called Felix in continental Europe. My cats liked this rabbit-duck-flavour, hopefully they'll like all 24 cans of it.

Kasvimaal - In the vegetable garden

Joka kevät tuo lehtii tulo koivuu niiko pääsöö yllättämmää. Ne jotekii räjähtäät näkyvii.

Every spring the pace of leaves appearing in the birches is a surprise. They sort of explode into view.




Mie oon seuraavat päivät tahi viikot kasvimaal kääntämäs maata. Eikä tarvihe olla yksinnää ei, tää apur käi viimevuotisii lupiiniloihe varjoo köllimää.

For the next days or maybe even weeks I'll be turning the soil in the veggie garden. As usual, I have my helpers - this one tried to hide in the shade of last summer's lupines.

Pihalla - On the yard

Joo-oh! Mie en valita. Oon haravoint ja puuhant muuta sensellasta pihamaal.

Hell yeah! I'm not complaining. I've been raking and doing other stuff on the yard.

Today I spent two happy hours with a hammer and a 15-kilo frozen block of chicken wings. Visited the dog food company's lorry today, see. But as usual I didn't need to work alone - help is always available, not just in Hogwarts.

Säilömine - Preserving

Tää on kyl jo ennätys. Neljäis viijettä (OLKOON NELJÄIS KANSSAIS) ja ensimäiset säilömisliikkeet on tehty. Käin pyykkii viemäs naruloile kuivamaa ja aittelin, jot vie männessäis tuo tullessais, poimi vuoheputket ollessais, ja niihä mie sit tein. Sit silppusin höijät suoraa pussiloihe ja pakkasee.

Huomen jos alottelis nokkosii kans ja käis kahtomas onks korvasienii  jo noust.

This is a personal record - it's the 4th of May (MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU) and I have officially started the preserving season. See, I was taking some laundry outside to dry and on the way back I picked some goutweed, then chopped it, bagged it and put it in the freezer.

I might pick some nettles tomorrow and check for mushrooms in the forest.

Näyttää kesäselt - Looks like summer

Sitä vois erehtyy luulemaa jot on kesä, ko lämpötilatkii huiteloot viijestoist ja yli. Va eile haravoijes sain taas muistutuksen jot huivi pittää olla kaulas, muute saap niska kylmää ja sit ei oo mukavaa.

You might think it's summer with temperatures over 15 Celsius but it isn't. Yesterday I was raking away without a scarf and the cold breeze did things with my neck. Not nice at all.



Mut, sinnepäi ollaa kuitekii mänös, ja kotmaisii tomaattiloihe kilohinta alkaa olla semmone jot sietää ostaa. Sehä vaati sit vähä kaverloi.

As the spring advances, the price of Finnish tomatoes goes down and has now passed my point of purchase (about 4 euros per kilo). Let the season therefore begin. Tomatoes, like so many other things, are at their best with friends.

Kevätjuttuloi - Spring things

Käytii varmistamas kauempaa tehty havainto jot jäät ois männeet. Ol ne. Uimaa en viel koirii päästänt vaik hallui ois vissikii olt.

From a distance it seemed like the ice was gone but I wanted to make sure so we walked to the lakeshore. Gone it is. I didn't let the dogs swim yet, though this one wanted to.





Lamme puolel samoin päivin jäitä viel vähä ol ko tuuli ei pääse siirtämää jäitä samalviisii ko järvel. Ja pienimäine lamp on iha umpijääs viel.

The pond is smaller so the wind can't grab the ice as strongly to start moving it around, therefore the ice usually lasts longer. And the smallest pond is frozen over still.

Plants are firm in their belief in spring. Even though it's been snowing here and there all over the country today.

I went for a checkup walk in the garden and as usual didn't have to go alone. This time it was Phantom who kept me company.
