Morkkis - Moral hangover

Olin huono ihmine ja lankesin houkutuksee. Ko viijettä kertaa viiko sisäl tyhjäsin puhelimest muistin jot se toimis viel, ni alko kiinnostaa uuve luuri hankkimine. I was a bad person and gave in to the lure of a new phone. My old one was working, yes, but I had to clean the cache about once a day. The problem was that with my lifestyle I needed a phone which can take a bit of water and dirt, but the only model to handle that was a newer version of my old one - with just as little memory. Alas! Someone in South Korea heard my wishes and they launched a brand new water and dust proof A series with a F1.9 camera and I fell for it immediately. Now I'm having the moral hangover phase, hoping I will survive this, as I'm going to pay a tenner a month for years for the new device.

Our worst-ever government (and that is saying something) just decided to cut unemployment benefits some more. The fact is you can corner a person but if you do, do not expect them to do something they might never have done before. I have always been an ethical buyer and tried to buy as much Finnish stuff as possible. That is in the past now. I shop at Lidl and buy whatever I can, not giving a flying fuck where it's from. Lidl, so that poor people could eat tasty stuff, too.

I have also learned the best time of week to find reduced prices (meaning stuff that's about to get old and therefore on sale) is the weekend. There's Mexican mayo (up yours Donald), meat substitute made out of fava beans, some pies with veggies, sausages, meatballs, risotto rice as well as parboiled/jasmin rice mix, bacon and bread, mango quark and whatnot. My freezer is full to the brim. Too bad they only reduce with 30% here, some bigger stores do 60% but they're too far away to be of any use.

Yesterday I printed and then visited the copying center of the town hall and came back with a printed copy of the great thing I mentioned before.

There's been a project called From War History to Modern Education. Some 20 locals were interviewed about what it was like to be a child or a teenager during the war (people who were ages 6 to 18 back in the day). A corresponding interview took place in Estonia. Over 450 pages of material was gathered. Ten stories were then chosen to be processed into comics about what the war was like for children.

Then there's a live action role play (larp) too, created from the same material. The idea is that people can travel here to larp in the authentic places where the stories actually happened. If that's not possible, the larp can be used in schools to teach war history in a completely novel way. All of this will be translated into 14 languages, localized for different European countries and distributed there. At the moment though it's only in Finnish (will report the English version soonest possible).

I've always wanted to take part in a larp, especially Halat hisar but haven't had the possibility. Hopefully things will improve one day and I will get the chance.

Valloo - Light

If you've seen Finnish November you know there's not much light. So people make some. This was taken with my phone, there will be better photos as soon as I grow up and learn to take care of my things, meaning I forgot the camera at work.

A merry Finnish Christmas carol states life lasts but for a moment and even that is gloomy and dull (I am not kidding you, that's a precise translation) and I've agreed with that for a long time. Especially if you try to be an alert, up-to-date person and watch the news channels.

On the news channels idiots become presidents. People drown in the Mediterranean. Some people think other people are not people at all. It creates havoc with blood pressure. Stay away.

But, today I participated in a seminar and got to listen to professionals talking about great things that have been created here, I mean here in the middle of nowhere! It was great.

(While listing things thou shalt not do: do not make and eat falafels for two days in a row if you've been diagnosed with IBS in the past. Just saying.)

After the holiday went back to work. The winter came, again.

There's this one tree that keeps its leaves and they turn white. My aunt said it's a bay willow, and since I've read my Tolkien (remember Old Man Willow?) I am staying away from it. But it looks creepy and great at the same time.

Meil on ehkä viistuhatta, no, ainakii tuhat diaa mitkä pies skannata. Ehkä ei iha kaikkii, mut suur osa nyt kuitekii. Nii jot ko pomo käski miu tutustuu digitointivehkeisii, otin niisanotust omat hommat mukkaa ja testasin ensimäisen tän dioje skannaamisen. En kyl meinaa tätä töis tehä, iha koton - saan lainaa diaskannerin, nii jot omaa tahtii sit vähitelle. Voip olla jot parhaimmat päätyyt Flickrii ja sielt tänne. Osa ko näistäkii on miu ottamii ja loput iskän. We've got about 5000, ok, maybe not quite that much but 1000 slides anyway from Africa which need to be scanned. Perhaps not all of them, but most. So when my boss told me to get familiar with the digitizing hardware I sort of brought my own stuff and tested the slide scanner first. I won't be doing this at work though, as some family members promised I could borrow their scanner so I'll do it at home bit by bit. The best ones will most probably end up in Flickr, and from there, here. Some of the photos are taken by me, others by my Dad. So to start here's one of the Ngorongoro Crater - the hoods we're all from originally, it's just some of us got this great idea to head north. (You morons!) Then again, the crater is in the highlands so the temperature is often below zero at night. Woollen socks are needed there, too.

Joel - By the river

Tännää perinteiselt "tarviittakstyömittäämieoonmänöskauppaa"-mummoluonkäynnilt tulles piäti joe rantaa ja västäräkki käi sanomas jot "vähäse".

Did my traditional "need anything, I'm going to the store?"-visit at Grandma's and afterwards I stopped by the river. Motacilla alba, white wagtail, came to say hello. We have a rhyme about migrating birds in Finnish, which roughly says that for the summer to arrive, it'll take half a moon after you've seen a  common chaffinch, a while after seeing the white wagtail but not even a day after the swallow. So, a while more, then.

Kamut lahjoit. Kamut on aika ihkui. Muumilasi toiselt ja toine laitto sit Gandalfpaijan, Taidevandaalikassin sekä omatekemii helmilöi. Ai mahoto! Vandaaliloist tää Lissu on olt miu suosikki alust lähtei, tykkään myös kovast tuosta alnäkyväst Kullervost. Tän kassi kans myö männää paikkoloihi, iha mihi vaa se pääsöö miu mukkaa.

Got gifts from friends. Friends are awesome. The other sent me a Moomin glass, the other package contained a Gandalf t-shirt, an art vandals bag* and some beads she's made herself. Thrilled!!

*art vandals is a comedy page on Facebook, they take a painting and create a saying to go with it. My favourite is this, which says "If you play Nothing Else Matters once more, Lizzy, I'll throw you and that f*cking mandoline overboard." I also highly enjoy this one, in which the Kalevala antihero Kullervo is trying to find a strong 3G signal, as promised by his mobile operator. These images became so popular they set up a shop and business is good. I will take my bag EVERYWHERE!

Kuujuttuloi - Moon stuff

Juu se superkuu. En laittant ees kelloo soimaa, nukuin suorilt ohi ja pilvistä ja vessaettaha se ol sit siihe aikaa tarjontkii. Tuumasin sit maantai-iltan, jot jos nyt ottas kuitekii muutama kuva ko hää nii täys on, eikä olt kovast pilvistäkkää. Ensihä mie meinasi olla laiska luikur, mänin iha makkarii jalusta kans ja tempasi kuuvvii sielt. En taas niiko yhtää muistant jot mil valotuksil ja aukoil ja muil härpäkkeil mie edellist kuvat oti, nii jot kokkeilemal taas män tikapoika puuhu ja löytyhä ne kraaterit sit ko tarpeeks räpläs.

I didn't bother to set the alarm for supermoon (here at about 5 am) on Monday morning, the weather was so cloudy the night before. But the skies cleared on Monday evening so I decided to take some photos then. The first one, artsy ain't it, was a lucky shot I took from the bedroom window. I got some other artistique photos too until the Moon moved and the glass started to make all kinds of reflections. Finally I gave up and went outside. I didn't have any clue whatsoever of the settings I used when I last took Moon photos, so I experimented all over again and managed to catch the craters.

Let me start with the two best moon songs ever. Remu & Ola. I know both songs by heart and I sing them with FEELING. (The latter one is actually of Italian origin, Guarda che luna, but in Finland we have this thing called "translate everything".) Anyway, Olavi Virta is like THE SINGER for several generations, a living legend, though passed away in 1971.

Ja sit ruokaa. Niiko sanoin ni mie oon eto peto tekemää pienel rahal hyyvvää ruokaa, eikähä tuo oma kasvimaa ainakaa haittaa asias yhtää. Tännää mansikkaa tuon ver ja potutkii alkaat olla syötävä kokosii, maust nyt puhumattakaa, sipulii harvennetaa syömäl. Kuvas näkkyy myös osa serkutuomist Ikea maustepurkkiloist, otin ne tännää käyttöö. Kyl nyt on! Kolmest neljä purki satsist jäi kolme purkkii käyttämättä. Makkuu elämää, niiku.

Food, oh glorious food. I mentioned I'm really good at making delicious food cheap and the garden helps a lot. That's the strawberry catch for today. My potatoes are getting edible-sized too and they taste great.

My cousin brought me small jars from Ikea (the postage would've been higher than the prize of three sets of jars) and I organized some of my spices today. She brought three sets, 4 jars in each, and I used all but three. Spice up your life, y'know.



Oiskoha sitä kessää ensikää jossei tätä tekis? Alle euron pussukka mozzarellaa, kotimaista tomaattii (omat ei oo viel syötäväs kunnos), mustaapippurii ja basilikaa. Tätä vois syyvä varmaa usseemma kilon iha ongelmitta mie luulen.

This is something I make a lot every summer. Mozzarella is surprisingly cheap and costs under 1 euro. The tomatoes are from a local farmer. Fresh basil and ground black pepper and that's it. I could probably eat this by the kilos, haven't tried, though.
