Syksyy - Autumn

Mie haluaisin oikeest nähä japanialaise autoinsinööri tahi asentajan kätöset, jot mite pienet ne on. Meinaan jot miu käet ei oo mitkää iha lapiot ja ahasta on aina ko pittää polttimo vaihtaa. Tul taas niiolle ajeltuu kuukaus par puolvaloloil enneks mie otin ja vaihoi sen hito polttimon. Reilu vartti män aikaa, ja tää ol se helpomp puol, vaik akkukii on eis. I would really want to see the hands of a Japanese car engineer slash repairperson as I want to know how small their hands are. Mine aren't actually shovel-sized but still changing the bulb is a pain in various bodyparts. Therefore I drove for a month or two with half lights until the summer light had vanished to the point I couldn't avoid the task longer. It took more than fifteen minutes and may I add this is the easier side, even though the battery is way too close. When the left one goes I usually drive to a garage and let them do the job, as I like to have the skin on my hands hole-free. With my lifestyle the wounds and scratches tend easily get infected (see next photo).




Käin taas koiranruoka-autol ja ostin viistoist killoo kanapojasiipii, koipinee. No nehä on jääs ja yhten mötlikkään ko haetaa, ja jot niitä ois niiko helpomp tarjoilla, ni annetaa niihe vähä sulahtaa (ei liikaa tai muute ne jäätyyt taas toisiise kiine) ja irrotellaa ja pussitettaa ja työnnetää uuvestaa pakkasee. I bought some frozen chicken wings with legs from a dog food lorry that drives around the country and stops here and there once a month. 15 kilos of them, in fact. They're frozen solid when bought so to make life easier, I let them thaw just a bit and then take the block apart and bag and freeze it again. The Swedish Mora knife is for sizing and with Tigga helping, the job took two hours.

It was a horrible summer weatherwise so I didn't expect much from the garden. In addition to peas and beans kale grew nicely, though, and lately there has been zucchini, which is quite a surprise to me. It's about time I harvest all of it, there's a whooping 7 degrees Celsius outside, if that.



Tungin sit kesäkurppaa piirakkaa fetan ja nokkosii ja aurinkokuivatu tomaati (olliit muute Lidlis tarjoukses eurol purkki! Ostin kuus!) ja ööh minkähä muun kans. No siis kuitekii, 1 muna, 1 ruokakermapurkki, täytteeks sitä mitä nyt sattuu olemaa ja ihetehty voitaikinapohja. Loput kesäkurpat raastoin ja pistin pakkasee tulevii kasvispihvilöi varte.

I made a quiche-ish pie with zucchini and nettles and feta and sundried tomatoes (they were on sale at Lidl, 1 euro per jar! I bought six!!) and 1 egg and some cream. Then I grated the rest of the zucchini and froze it, it will become veggie burger steaks in the future.




Lehtikaali käsittelyy mie tän salaattilingon kirpparilt ostin ja siinhä se on hyvä ko hitto. Kannatti maksaa (ja hyvä jot sattu olemaa) neljä euroo.

The salad spinner I found at the flea market for 4 euros has been put to good use with kale. Glad I found it (and had the four euros).

Jotakii sentää tulloo kasvimaalt. Lehtikaalsato tulloo olemaa runsas. Härkäpappuu ei paljo oltkaa, pottuu viel muutamaa ruokaa ja pensaspappuu tulloo sitäkii määrääse nähe iha hyvi.

There's something in the garden at least. Kale is plentiful, there are potatoes for a few meals left, and the beans did quite well considering I didn't plant that much.



Sit ol ne Perseidit. Nii. Mie varustauvuin ja käin kahtomas mite hienost taivas ol pilves ja tulin sisäle.

The Perseids were peaking a while ago. I got all prepped and went to see how nicely clouded the sky was and came back inside.

Sattaa - It rains

Forrest Gumpis on kohtaus mis alkaa sattaa ja sit se sattaakii kaike aikaa pari kuukautta. Vähä tuntuu samalt. No, eile tein sit pullaa.

There's a scene in Forrest Gump where it starts to rain and keeps raining for months. I think it's happening in real life here. Yesterday I baked to forget the rain.




Iltaa männes se onneks loppu ja nähtii hetkellisest sinistä taivasta. Tännää on taas harmaata.

In the evening it stopped and the sky was momentarily blue. Today it's grey again.



Vähä aikaa luulin jot karhu on liikkeel, mut ei sit oltkaa.

For a while I thought the dogs heard a bear but fortunately it was something else this time.

Kasvimaal ei oikei tapahu ko ei oo aurinkoo. Herne kuitekii kasvaa ja pavut, viimosel ollaa päästy syömää ommii herneitä.

The only things growing in the garden are peas and beans. No sun, no crops.

I ought to get started with these, too. The taste is not as sour now so they're ready for juice making.

Itärajal ei mittää uutta - Nothing new on the Eastern border

Lauvantain ol viitise minuuttii poutaa. Käin sillo kasvimaal ja sain seuraa, neljä viijest ol mukan. Nii tää on sit se kasvimaa vanha puol mihi tarviais pientä laittoo niiko näkkyy. En oo jaksant.

On Saturday it stopped raining for about five minutes which I spent in the vegetable garden with 4 out of 5 cats as company. This is the old side of the vegetable garden which needs some serious work, haven't been up to it so it is what it is.

I went looking for boletes - I spotted one on the dogwalk but it grew in the pee-infected area so I couldn't pick that one. I found none in the forest yet, though.

I did the front lawn and it's quite tidy now. Let's not even mention the other side of the yard where a meter-and-a-half jungle awaits the day when I'm painless and energetic. The cat appreciated the effort though and came to take a break with me.

Vielkii kasvimaal - Still in the vegetable garden

Ai nii. Silt varalt jot tulloo omituisii lauseita - miu ikiwanhan konee näppis ryttyilöö, erityisest n-kirjain ja välilyönti ja piste ja pilkku. Uutee konneesee ei tuu olemaa rahhaa nii jot täl männää, eikä vihreet johu välttämättä pelkästää miust.

Several keys on my keyboard have stopped working properly, including the letter n, spacebar, comma, period. Can't afford a new computer, therefore apologizing for typos which are very likely to occurr but not all of which are my fault.

I decided to put up some support for the peas, this time well and early before they grow so long they fall on the ground. Didn't mow the lawn today because it was raining AGAIN (bloody hell I'm fed up with the constant rain and it seems the rest of Finland has been dry and sunny for weeks) but in the evening I grabbed the scythe and cut the long hay on the sides of the road. And auntie dear cut my hair today, it's short and perky and I love it (and the fact it doesn't need 3 hours to dry as it does whenever it's longer than 10 cm).

My strawberry rows aren't technically rows and there are some weeds too but look at those blossoms.

Nurtsii - Lawn

Sitä jos muutama viiko on kasvimaal ja sen jälkee makkaa roppa rikki, ni nurtsiha kostaa sen välittömäst ja humahtaa. Tännää puskettii Franki kans etupiha.

In the few weeks I spent in the vegetable garden and recovering from the effort the lawn took its revenge. Frank and I did the front lawn today.

I started to feel it was time to park both myself and Frank. We'll continue some other day.

The front lawn was so pretty! Unfortunately it doesn't stay that way, so I mowed it with not-so-cooperating Frank. The rest of the yard still looks like this so I'm not depriving the bumblebees' food. Yesterday, in related news, a hornet flew in the house. Jeez it's big, like a small horse or something. I resorted to the traditional glass & postcard combination and carried her out, then ran like hell. Her, because I suspect she was The Queen - she was GIGANTIC.




Saman päivän heiluttelin vähä talikkoo. Sillo urakka näytti viel aikamoiselt. Ja arvaa mitä! Sain migreenin!! Jee! Mie voitin taas! Ja välil mie itkeskelin ko äänikirjas ol nii surullissii kohtii, niiko nyt vaik Dobby. BYHYYY. Se on näätse tää karjalaine luonne, tiijäthäsie.

On the same day I went berserk with the pitchfork, for 4 whole hours. And guess what! I got a migraine!! Yay! I won again! And once in a while I cried listening to an audiobook which was at some points so sad (ref: Dobby.) BOOHOO. Us Karelians are such an emotional bunch, you know. Very unlike the stereotypical Finns.



Nii, jot tuumasin sit alottaa tänkii kauven ja pistin kylvyn tulile. Hitto et tek hyyvvää.

So after all that hard work I figured I can haz bath. It was great.

Today I finished weeding the soil.

Before noon the weather was ghastly so I baked some bread and buns and prepared a batch of soup vegetables and froze them.

Ruokaa - Food

Vuoheputkee mones ruuvas. Pastasalaattii ja Jamie Oliverin kikhernesalaattii ja tavallista salaattii ja uunimunakkaita muffinssivuuas. Ja kaikis tais olla vuoheputkee.

Goutweed in various forms. Pasta salad, Jamie Oliver's chickpea salad, a plain tomato-cucumber salad and frittatas made in the muffin tin. Goutweed in all.

I've gathered nettles, then boiled and frozen them.

It is quite surprising how many planes fly by crossing Russia to the Far East.



Vuoheputkipenkki. Kasvaa ja kukoistaa ilma et tarvihtoo mittää tehä. Miu selkäin hajos viime viikol sen Frankilykkimise ja talikoimise kans nii jot iha vast nyt oon jonkiimoises kunnos (nii jot huomen sinne kasvimaale, kesä kulluu, pittää saaha kylvettyy, aika loppuu ja maalima on pilal.)

Goutweed flourishes on its own, no need to do anything, just pick and eat. Fortunately so. I broke my back really bad pushing Frank around and then adding some pitchfork madness on top, it's still sore but tomorrow I'm going to the vegetable garden no matter what  All will be lost otherwise, I need to sow the seeds and stop wasting time. Finnish summer is short and unreliable.

The apple tree is in bloom, too. This is not a very tasty apple unfortunately, I think this one's called Pirja. The photo clearly shows my nonexistent skills in pruning apple trees, as in I haven't done it at all just to be safe, I should put some effort and time in learning how to do it properly. I also have another apple tree which is my favourite but it's still young and doesn't bloom yet. I've understood bending it's branches downwards might help but the branches are so thin I haven't come up with a safe way to do it yet.

It took a little less than 10 hours to mow the whole lawn but now the first time is done. And as agreed, next time will be easier. Yeah. Right. So I thought I might make a few earrings to get the jewellery shop going again. Spring green with surgical steel.

So now that the lawn is done for a while, I grabbed the pitchfork and worked in the vegetable garden. Help was again available although she focused on supervising my work, occasionally playing with the weeds I pulled and demanding some love & tenderness. I was happy to oblige.

Etenöö - Some progress

Mjoo. Eile ol vappaapäivä ko ol  migreeni. Tännää vejeltii kolmise tuntii ja saatii viimevuotine kasvusto nuri, nyt ei ois ko tieyläpuol ennää, heh heh (väsynyttä nauruu niiko). Ja sit tulkii migreeni! Ehä siin ko pillerii kitusii, josko huomen sit se loppu. Siel on viimevuotise kasvuston lisäks melkomoine myyräpopulaatio, päätelle siit mite monta myyräkekkoo sinne on ilmiintynt. Niitä on sit nii lusti tuuppii tasaseks ko kuiva multa pöllyvää silmii, ai että. No, ens kerta on sit jo helpomp. (Ihavvarmaa on.)

Yeah. I took a day off yesterday because I had a migraine. Today Frank and I spent some 3 hours of  quality time together and got this part done. And guess what! I got a migraine! Now all that's left is the other side of the road, which, in addition to being hard to mow due to the dried hay growth of last year, has served as a recreational center for moles. A lot of them actually, judging by the mole hills that appeared in just a few weeks. Oh what fun it is to push Frank the Heavy around, flattening the mole hills as we go, puffing up dry soil clouds into my eyes! I try to comfort myself with the thought of next time being much easier. (Yeah, right.)

Nurmikol - On the lawn

Jatkamme sarjaa "pihal ja puutarhas" eli siirryttii nurmikole. Noh. Täs on Frankenstein elikkäs Frank. (Calamari Union: "Anna palaa, Frank. Tuttu latu.") Hää onkii aika epel: ruma, painava, parsittu ja korjattu. Päivä takuu päättymise jälkee hää herkes vetämäst, ja vetosysteemhä ol sit tietyst tehty sillee jot ihe vekoti ol hitsattu sen ympärile jot ei onnistu korjaamine mitekää. Mut eihä siin, jaksaaha sitä työntää ko syöp kunno ruokaa, jatketaa! No sit hää tuumas jot kerräämine on iha vihoviimosta ja kerräin läks tyyte irti. Kasvimaa ois arvostant kovast sitä ruohosilppuu, mut ei sit ko ei ker huvita kerätä. Siit seuras jot hää rupes tukehtummaa helpost ko tuo takaläppä ol allaal, nii jot kiinnitettii se luukku auk -asentoo rautalanga kans. Sit Frankil ol vissikii ärsyttävä pikkunälkä, ko yks kesä hää tempas etupyörät kitusiise. Hajettii sit Biltemast uuvet ja taas mäntii. Sit irtos jous, ja katkes vaijer, ja vaik mitä - rautalangal sain hänet kolme kertaa korjattuu, mut sit luovutin ko ei ennää kestänt käynnis. No, nyt sit kahottii josko hänest viel sais pellii, ja kuormajous ko irrotettii (turvamekanismit, pah!) ni iha pien rautalanka piisas. Nyt hää vörkkii taas, ja mie surruuttelen onnessai pitki pihhaa. Mie nimittäi oikeest tykkään ruoholeikkuust - siin on kuntosali ja selkähoito samas, hikkoilemine tekköö hyyvvää nahkale ja jalkalihakset saap kunno reenii ko Frank on tosiaa aika hevi kaver. Samal sit lyhyt nurmikko pittää punkit kuris mikä on seihtemä eluka talos aika hyvä juttu, eikä kastu kengät eikä jalat eikä polta nokkoset ko kävelöö pihal.

In our series "on the yard  and in the garden" we have progressed to the lawn. Hi everybody, meet Frankenstein, Frank for short. He's ugly and heavy and he's been fixed a million times with wire.

A day after the warranty ended so did the self-propelling. It was added to Frank's chassy in the very early manufacturing stages so that Frank was practically welded around it. Impossible to fix, that is. But I'm strong so no matter, I can push him around easy. Then Frank decided that bagging the cut grass was a completely useless feature and stopped doing it. I did have use for the shredded grass in the vegetable garden - I used to cover the soil with it, it helped maintain the moisture and stopped weeds from overtaking the veggies, but Frank said this was non-negotiable and I had to give in. Removing the bag resulted in Frank choking on longer grass continuously, so we took some wire and yanked the rear flap into a permanently open position.

The next summer Frank was probably hungry because he ate his front wheels. Well no matter, we did a road trip to Biltema and got us some wheels. They're smaller than the originals though so he's now got a mean forward-leaning look. Then flew a spring and a wire snapped and and and - three times I was able to fix him with wire, then I gave up. Therefore all the summer of 2015 we had a jungle around the house, with meter-high thistles and nettles.

This spring we took a look wondering if we could revive him. We took the safety mechanism off (they're Bah! Humbug anyway) and after that a teensy weensy bit of wire did the trick. IT'S ALIVE! So Frank and I have had lots of sweet moments together - I actually like mowing the lawn, it's like going to a gym and a back massage all in one, plus my skin likes the sweating, the short grass keeps the ticks at bay (with seven pets, not at all a minor plus) and my shoes or toes stay dry when walking on the yard.

Kevääkoivuvihree!

Spring birch green!



Harva assii saap nii levollisele mielele ko se jot kaapit on täys ruokaa. Täl kertaa se ol kissaruokaa. Tilasin raksuloi (kymmenä killoo, piisaa ehkä kuukauve) ja Latzii, paitsi jot se on maalimal Felix. Mei kissat tykkäsiit täst kaniankast kovast, toivottavast tykkäävät koko kahekymmenäneljä purki eest.

I get a content zen feeling whenever my stocks are full of food. Today it was cat food, a shipment of dry food (10 kilos, will last for about a month) and Latz  which is called Felix in continental Europe. My cats liked this rabbit-duck-flavour, hopefully they'll like all 24 cans of it.
