I finally found aliexpress when looking for a nice geeky case for my new monthly payment phone. There actually is a Tardis-themed one I'm going to purchase at some point. (Actually I would have wanted a case with Toothless on it, especially the one with just the eyes and snout, but there weren't any for my phone model WHICH SUCKS BIG TIME.) I also needed a new wallet for all the money I'm going to earn now that I have a few months continuous work. My old wallet was falling apart. So there. Mischief managed.

I watched my first anime films this winter (finally) and it was pretty predictable which character I found the most adorable. This one cost 4 dollars including postage. But didn't find a Toothless wallet either WHICH SUCKS etc. Anyway, this wallet is dedicated for my pension savings. So far it's empty.

Tatu and Patu are two anarchistic brothers who are inventors and live in Strangeville. There's a series of childrens' books about them, the movie was released last year and the dvd is now at the library. I liked it.

I'm a member of a nerdy flea market online which has improved my life a lot (I'm looking at my Police Box lunch box with love). Someone was selling Skyrim at a bargain price so naturally I went for it - I have wanted to play it for years but haven't had a console/computer that could run it until now. I got a PS3 via my brother in  the winter and then got about five Assassin's Creed games which I absolutely love. Now I can add Skyrim to the menu as well and if my friends are to be trusted (and they usually are) I will not need anything else to do for about a year.

Before Skyrim I need to finish the legendary 90s tv series Prime Suspect, though. It was available here and there in the cooperating libraries so I ordered all the episodes and now I'm nearly done, only two of the seven episodes left. Helen Mirren is great as are the other actors, from Fiennes to Capaldi. Suberb acting, great plots.

A winter full of aches and pains and fatigue is finally behind. I doubled my medication to get some decent sleep to stay operational. Did not do much during the winter except for this jumper which I delivered to the person I had in mind while knitting it. It's +10 at the moment and I think it hasn't rained once today, which is nice.

But then.

On May Day a grief settled upon the neighbourhood, a grief so severe it will probably stay here forever. If we somehow learn to live with it, that is enough but even that seems really impossible at the moment. The purpose of life seems to have vanished. It is so unfair that such a tragedy happens to nice people. It is very difficult to get a hold of life again after something like this has happened. I don't know how. Just taking one day at a time, I guess.

Morkkis - Moral hangover

Olin huono ihmine ja lankesin houkutuksee. Ko viijettä kertaa viiko sisäl tyhjäsin puhelimest muistin jot se toimis viel, ni alko kiinnostaa uuve luuri hankkimine. I was a bad person and gave in to the lure of a new phone. My old one was working, yes, but I had to clean the cache about once a day. The problem was that with my lifestyle I needed a phone which can take a bit of water and dirt, but the only model to handle that was a newer version of my old one - with just as little memory. Alas! Someone in South Korea heard my wishes and they launched a brand new water and dust proof A series with a F1.9 camera and I fell for it immediately. Now I'm having the moral hangover phase, hoping I will survive this, as I'm going to pay a tenner a month for years for the new device.

Naturally I acted reasonably and prioritized the apps I wanted which means Weather Doge was one of the first to be installed. UFOloi - UFOs

A knitter's UFO is not in the sky but an UnFinished Object. I have been tracking them from drawers and yarn baskets and started working on them again.

And then something awesome. You know when a person starts working for the public side and immediately begins to favour their friends? Yeah well me too. I suggested we could ask Anna Kortelainen to visit and tell us about her search for family members in Vyborg. We did and she said yes. We met in 1990 and since then she's written several books, fact and fiction both, been on TV and what not (not to mention she's just a wonderful person) so I figured some interest might arise if she came to visit. Indeed it did! We ran out of chairs several times and I counted more than 130 listeners, which is HUGE here in our hoods. Her story was extremely enchanting and we all listened so silently I could sometimes hear the library book code reader beeping all the way from the desk. Thanks, Anna, for a wonderful evening!

Porkkala

Siin se nyt on. Ehkä iha hivene liia makkeeta, tietyst porkkanalajikekkii vaikuttaa, mut kyl on hämmentävä lähel kylmäsavulohe makkuu tää. Ja ko tähä kulluu porkkanaa, kilohinta pari euro luokkaa, ja paketti merisuolaa, ei paljoo sekkää, ja ensimäine valmistusvaihe hoituu leipomisuuni jälkilämmöis, ni mielellää tien toisekii ker ko niitä loppumarinadilitkuloi nyt on. Kylmäsavulohta miul ko ei oo rahhaa ostaa, ni halvale kopiole on kysyntää.

So here it is. Perhaps just a bit too sweet to my liking, then again the specific carrot type probably makes a difference, too, as some are sweeter than others. But the taste is confusingly close to cold smoked salmon. And since the price of carrots is something like 2 euros a kilo and the sea salt is cheap as well, I am very happy for this cheap copy - I never buy the real cold smoked salmon, it's way over my price range. Now that I've got the smoke aroma, I will surely make more.

Ruokaa - Food

This is an ornament from Imatran Valtionhotelli's yule tree. They serve the best yule menu ever - I had the unique opportunity to eat there thanks to my employer and I will cherish this for years. It was so delicious.



"Porkkala" on uus resept mil pies saaha porkkanast kylmäsavulohe olosta. Vegaanit ol löytäneet tän jostakii Ameriikast ja sit se levitä humaht tänne nii jot tuo savuaromi on olt vähä sielt ja täält loppu. Miul on nyt erä jääkaapis ja koht testataa.

"Porkkala" (combination of Finnish words for carrot and fish) has been the most hyped recipe lately - a way to transform carrots into something which apparently is very much like cold smoked salmon. Some vegans saw the recipe on some American page, made a video in Finnish about it and now it's spreading like wildfire in Finland. So much so that liquid smoke aroma has been sold out here and there. I made a batch and it's now in the fridge ready for testing.

Sit viel tuo ranneke - mie oon hinkunt Fitbiti ranneketta vaik kui kauva, jot saisin selvää dataa jot mikä miu ololoihe vaikuttaa kaiki enite. My Yule was yesterday. Another geek girl had replaced her Assassin's Creed games for the newer PlayStation so she suggested sending me these PS3 versions for the cost of the postage. So now I have the whole series, all 6 games, which I could not have afforded otherwise. I also got some white chocolate with blueberries in the mail and gas - in the form of a gift card, not in liquid - so that I could participate on a writers' course next year. Unfortunately the course ended up to be longer than I expected and a fee was added so I'll have to skip it but I solemnly sweared to drive around just for fun otherwise.

And then the wrist band - I've wanted to have a Fitbit one for ages so I could get data on what affects my pain levels. Excel, you know, geek as I am, to the rescue. Then I found out that Fitbit is not waterproof. Then a Finnish online electronics store published their yearly "don't buy this stuff" lists and the Fitbits were on the podium with most problems. So I switched my wanting to Garmin which is waterproof and has a heart rate monitor and now my dear friend organized so that I got a second hand band. The joy! I've been tweaking settings and syncing and whatnot and waiting to build up  a database about different weather and meals and activity and stuff to see what has the biggest impact. No, materia is not the goal of life, but I sure appreciate these gifts now that I've gone so long with no possibilities to buy anything I want. This lot will cover several Yules.

Sekalaisii olotiloloi - Mixed feelings

Mie oon shopant ja oon olt siit ilone. Tätä mie oon hinkunt vuostolkul ja nyt sain viimosel vekottime mil se pyörii, mänin välittömäst nettikauppaa ja tilasin hintaa 9,95 miinus kybermaantaiale, nii jot 11,90 ol hää posteinee ja sen ver just kärsin laittaa. Hyyvvää jouluu miule! Sit tein vähä lisempääkii bisnestä samast aiheest, mut siit myöhemmi. Ja lisäks viel joululahjaks taijan saaha yhe jutun mitä oon kans hinkunt vissikii par vuotta jo, toivottavast näi käyp. Mut siis nythä mie ratsastelen Damaskokses ja suoritan tehtävii.

I've been shopping and enjoying every minute of this rare occasion. I finally got a PS3 (at least temporarily) which meant I could finally purchase this game which I've wanted for years. It was 9,95 minus cyber Monday reduction so I got it for 11,90, postage included, a sum even I could afford. Merry Yule to me! For the time being though I'll be in Damascus riding around, completing missions.

Something incomprehensible happened this weekend. A young man shot three women in the middle of the street in Imatra. The next morning the names started to appear and one of the victims was my ex-colleague. We weren't close but got along and we met briefly just last week. We talked a bit and I told her she looked great. The other victims were journalists and I especially enjoyed the columns of one of them. One person's bad feelings and a resulting irrational act causes such an amount of sorrow it's hard to comprehend. And so far the media has concentrated on the victims - I thought instantly of the people close to the shooter. I wish them strength and hope they'll overcome the (probably inevitable) feeling that maybe if they'd have done something differently they could have prevented this.

I was asked for stitch markers. The largest mandrel I've got is 7 mm so I had to invent. I took a piece of 12 mm copper tube and made the rings with it, then sawed really carefully holding the spiral in my fingers. No bloodshed, yay. Then I added glue and a bead and now there are 30+ of these going to be tested. I also knitted a pair of tailored fingerless mittens but there's no photo of them, at least not yet.

I have also learned the best time of week to find reduced prices (meaning stuff that's about to get old and therefore on sale) is the weekend. There's Mexican mayo (up yours Donald), meat substitute made out of fava beans, some pies with veggies, sausages, meatballs, risotto rice as well as parboiled/jasmin rice mix, bacon and bread, mango quark and whatnot. My freezer is full to the brim. Too bad they only reduce with 30% here, some bigger stores do 60% but they're too far away to be of any use.

Yesterday I printed and then visited the copying center of the town hall and came back with a printed copy of the great thing I mentioned before.

There's been a project called From War History to Modern Education. Some 20 locals were interviewed about what it was like to be a child or a teenager during the war (people who were ages 6 to 18 back in the day). A corresponding interview took place in Estonia. Over 450 pages of material was gathered. Ten stories were then chosen to be processed into comics about what the war was like for children.

Then there's a live action role play (larp) too, created from the same material. The idea is that people can travel here to larp in the authentic places where the stories actually happened. If that's not possible, the larp can be used in schools to teach war history in a completely novel way. All of this will be translated into 14 languages, localized for different European countries and distributed there. At the moment though it's only in Finnish (will report the English version soonest possible).

I've always wanted to take part in a larp, especially Halat hisar but haven't had the possibility. Hopefully things will improve one day and I will get the chance.

On the news channels idiots become presidents. People drown in the Mediterranean. Some people think other people are not people at all. It creates havoc with blood pressure. Stay away.

But, today I participated in a seminar and got to listen to professionals talking about great things that have been created here, I mean here in the middle of nowhere! It was great.

There's this one tree that keeps its leaves and they turn white. My aunt said it's a bay willow, and since I've read my Tolkien (remember Old Man Willow?) I am staying away from it. But it looks creepy and great at the same time.
