Silver jewellery is regulated so that if the weight of the silver per jewellery piece exceeds 10 grams you need to stamp it to show it's really silver. It takes two stamps - the other one tells the material (for example 925 to show that the piece is 92,5% pure silver, also called sterling silver) and the other one the maker.
